MacBook Air - money for nothing?

Apple have just announced the arrival of the MacBook Air. Well, to be more precise, they have announced that you an pre-order it, but still... It's an ultra-thin laptop, designed pimarily to be used as a wireless workstation. It ain't powerful, it hasn't got a built-in optical drive (DVD or CD), but it is very thin and looks wonderful.

Oh, and it's going to cost about £1200.

£1200 for a thin laptop!? Call me daft, but I'd rather pay a little less for a thicker one that comes with a DVD drive. But Apple users can be very style-conscious, and no doubt there will be a demand for this. Heck, if I had money to burn I might buy one myself... but I don't.

I have to say, it does look lovely, and it does use some very innovative technology (I love the idea of a dual-touch touchpad), but it just seems like a lot of money to pay for suprisingly little. I'm a mac fan, but I think even I would take some convincing on this one.

Perhaps I'm missing the point.

I think its main niche (apart from insuring that they are in the ultra-portable market, at least kinda) will be businesses.

To me it seems designed to be used at the office by sharing its resources (without having to worry about lots of connections) and then off on a flight to meeting, all on its massive 5 hours charge, with wireless on, I was lucky if I could get 2 hours from my laptop with it off. :)

You know, the more I think about it I really don't use my DVD drive that much any more, I use USB flash drives more and only really use DVDs for installing software and watching movies.

Yeah its too expensive, but then again, so is almost everything Apple do, it is as you say a style thing.

Bit of a long winded reply for just "I agree" isn't it :)

Never use one word when two will do, eh? :)

I just know that if I bought one, the first thing I would want to do is burn a CD... and I wouldn't have ordered the superdrive addon.

Having said that, and as Dawn has pointed out, when I see one I'll suddenly want one!
